Purpose:
The Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Department at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit Catholic University located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, seeks a tenure-track faculty member in the area of sustainable infrastructure materials at the assistant professor level to begin in Fall 2024. SCU embraces a teaching-scholar model for its full-time faculty and as a result there is an emphasis on both exceptional teaching and strong research.

Responsibilities:

We seek an enthusiastic educator with research expertise in the development, processing, testing, and implementation of green, sustainable, and smart infrastructure materials who can connect their research and teaching to the broad challenges of building infrastructure to serve humanity through the 21st century and beyond. This is in line with the new challenges highlighted by the American Society of Civil Engineers that address significant changes in resource availability and environmental conditions under which infrastructure systems are expected to operate. We strive to educate students who can design and implement infrastructure components (e.g., high performance buildings, efficient transportation and energy systems, etc.) of the built environment to minimize adverse impacts of the environment and be resilient to changes.
The successful candidate will have an enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to taking advantage of SCU's many resources for improving teaching. Specific classes to be taught include lecture and lab courses in civil engineering materials at the undergraduate level, as well as courses in their areas of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate may be asked to teach undergraduate mechanics and graphical communication courses depending on departmental needs. In addition, the candidate will be expected to develop an active and independent research program, and involve undergraduate and graduate students in their research. All faculty are expected to engage in the Department, University, professional, and/or community service.

Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or equivalent by the time of employment.
A passion for excellence in teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and graduate levels.
A vigorous commitment to development of a productive and independent research program.
An enthusiastic commitment to contributing to an academic culture that is inclusive of a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
Expressed desire to engage the broader community on and outside campus.
Experience in undergraduate instruction and curriculum development.
